Mei Day
MEI DAY

Mei Day (not to be mistaken for the distress call "mayday") is an annually celebrated holiday that falls on the 1st of May of every year. Mei Day marks the beginning of the Month of Mei, which happens to be the month of May. Although this holiday serves no real purpose other than to elucidate the homophonous pun of interchanging the word “May” with “Mei,” the holiday has come to be recognized by close friends and family to Mei (also known as “Christina” or “the baby mei”).

The History of Mei Day
In the strictest sense the holiday historically originated on May 1, 1984, when the baby Mei experienced her first month of May; however, due to her lack of cognizance at such a young age, the holiday did not come into observation until the clever pun was openly publicized May 1, 2006.

Related Holidays
Prior to the official establishment of the holiday, Mei herself celebrated various other holidays on what was to become Mei Day.

The holiday May Day, which precludes the current Mei Day is also observed annually on May 1st. May Day originated from pre-Christian, pagan traditions for celebrating the onset of springtime but is more commonly known for the infamous dances around the Maypole. Interestingly enough, during her grade school years, Mei participated in several school productions in celebration of May Day. During these school productions, Mei, along with her peers, performed the traditional Maypole dances. Presently, for obvious reasons, Mei no longer dances around poles of any sort due to the risqué implications of such behavior at her age; not to mention, there are no Meipoles to frolick around.

In the United States another holiday once shared May 1st: Labor Day. Labor Day was later changed to be observed on the first Monday in September, which occasionally falls on Mei’s Birthday (September 2nd). Coincidence? We think not.

Other Holidays That Fall on Mei Day:
- In Europe, May 1st is most commonly celebrated as International Worker's Day.
- In China, May 1st marks the first day of the Golden Weeks, which allows workers a 7 day holiday from work.
- Annivesary of the Hay Market Riot in Illinois

Other similar holidays include Meimorial Day, which is a United States Federal Holiday. This holiday is observed on the last Monday of the month of May.
